The Polk County Itemizer-Observer newspaper, part of Eagle Newspapers Inc., has an immediate opening for a part-time position in our newsroom.
This position requires working 24 to 28 hours a week covering a variety of beats including city government, schools, a state university, agriculture and writing features. Additional hours may occasionally be available to work on special projects or fill in for vacationing staff members.
Our ideal candidate will be an energetic, detail-oriented, self-motivated team player with strong time management skills. Newspaper experience at the professional or collegiate level, as well as knowledge of the AP Stylebook, is required to be considered. If you can take newspaper-quality photos (you know the difference between photojournalism and shooting portraits), have graphic design skills and can help paginate the newspaper using QuarkXPress you’ll move to the top of the line.
This position has the possibility of moving to full time in three to six months. You’ll get our attention even faster if you already live in Oregon or a neighboring state. There is no relocation assistance or help with moving expenses available.
Reliable transportation a must. Motor vehicle driving record check as well as pre-employment drug screening required. EOE.
To be considered, send a cover letter telling us why you’re the perfect candidate for this job, your resume, references and a variety of recently published newspaper writing samples (photos and page design samples would also help) to Kurt Holland, managing editor, Polk County Itemizer-Observer, P.O. Box 108, Dallas, OR 97338; email to ionews@polkio.com; or fax to 503-623-2395.
Please don’t make us search the Internet for your professional portfolio by sending us a one-paragraph note with a web link. Show us how much you really want to join our team. Deadline to apply is Friday, March 8, but we may start interviewing before that. We’ll be acting fast, so don’t wait!
